SCREEN TIME: Word in Transit 5
Yoke Collective join Word in Transit for the combined SCREEN TIME performance event / publication launch for the 5th Word in Transit.
Screens saturate our everyday journeys on the tube, from information signs to passengers distracted by smartphones and tablets. Moving image billboards jostle for attention as advertisements crowd the platform and tube carriages, similarly, designed to appeal to your best consumer/commuter instincts. A captured audience, speed and distraction contribute to just more junktime, as wifi snakes its way underground. The mass distributed newspaper is regurgitated, littered across carriages and platforms, in a daily rotation of information. The written word is layered with tannoy announcements, departure boards amidst the codes of strictly adhered to British etiquette, born of both transport safety requirements and bodies in close proximity. The commuter as data sponge, trapped in a loop of pulsating information. SCREEN TIME is looking for ways to communicate through these distractions using the broad idea of the screen, through experimental and interactive performance.
Performances of 1-5 minutes will take place in the tube carriage, on the platform and during the interchanges throughout the journey. Entering the public transport network from a central London tube stop, the performers, and audience, will journey through the interconnected labyrinth to surface at Banner Repeater reading room and Artists’ Publishing Archive, on Hackney Downs train station.
Yoke Collective and Word in Transit invite submissions:
· live performative works (1-5 minutes in duration) that take place on the Underground itself.
· works for an A5 publication that will launch at Banner Repeater – these could relate to your performance or other work relating to the themes of the SCREEN TIME performance event. Publication submissions could range from diagrams, screenshots, text or image works, the resolution of which you should specify.
